In addition to being the famed “Real Estate Agent to the Hipsters”, Harman has a seasoned background in mortgage and finance which has been tremendously helpful to his clients. Harman got his start in real estate by writing about the Downtown L.A. Renaissance back when the only people who cared about DTLA, were the people who lived down there. From those early beginnings, he has been able to predict market trends and identify opportunities before his colleagues and competitors catch on.
Before his career in real estate, Harman flew in the U.S. Air Force where his primary mission was to follow and protect Air Force One.
“Want to know about high-pressure situations?” asks Harman. “Imagine you’re following Air Force One on a protection mission while being tracked by North Korean surface-to-air missile radar sites the whole time. After that, negotiating sales prices is a piece of cake.”
We put a little – not a lot – of pressure on Harman as we sat down with him to ask what it was that he loved about Teles. He had a lot to say about the culture of support, the relationships, and how it feels to be a part of the Teles family.
Why do you love Teles?
I could go on and on, but to keep this short, I’ll boil it down to my top three:
First, everyone here strives to be better. Better agents, better people, eat better, live better. From top producers to brand new guys. There is so much personal development going on. Seminars, masterminds, podcasts, listing presentation happy hours, you name it.
Second, the agents. The people are so collaborative and eager to share new ideas with each other. Can’t tell you how many times I came up with one idea, shared it, and other agents have helped me tweak it to make it better. They could just as easily said, “That’s nice.”
Third, Peter and Sharran. Those two combined are my “spirit animal”. Their excitement keeps me fired up, and they always have a new perspective to look at something. And, as busy as they are, they’re still super available to their hundreds of agents.
What’s your favorite aspect?
I think we’re wired a little different than other real estate companies. It’s like a clan with a secret handshake.
I don’t know if anyone else does this, but whenever I see Teles open house signs, I always stop–whether I know the agent or not. Not just in L.A. either. Orange County, Palm Springs, wherever.
What Teles features help you drive your business?
I’d say it’s not just features that drive business; it’s the whole environment. I’ve felt encouraged to have more of a presence online, and that has really driven my business.
Also, collaborating with other agents. A good portion of my business comes from working within the Teles family. Co-listings, teaming up with buyers, referrals, everything. Not just out of convenience either; we seek each other out.
But if had to name one actual feature, it has to be the Home Valuation tool. It’s a great conversation starter in my neighborhood.
Why did you join?
I was referred to Teles by a few people. They both basically said, “I don’t care who you think you’re signing with, I’m taking you over to meet the Managing Director at Teles Properties. This is the broker for you.
It was pure luck. Very happy my friends were looking out for me. I can’t imagine being anywhere else.
